Back in 2016 Teegan and Mahatia chose to say “screw it” to the government and have a commitment ceremony labelling it as “their wedding”. They had no idea if and when Australia would finally make same-sex marriages legal. So whilst we had an absolute blast capturing their wedding at Baxter Barn we felt bittersweet about the fact that they were still not considered as equal as the rest of us in the eyes of the law. Their amazing Celebrant Dee had a chat with us on the day and we all promised the girls that as soon as marriage equality was legalised we would be there to capture their union once again. We had NO idea how epic an event this was going to turn out to be!
It was only announced at the end of 2017 that same-sex marriage would FINALLY be legal in Australia! The girls tried really hard to ignore the process of the postal vote etc.. and not get their hopes up but when they heard the announcement that the people of Australia had voted YES they burst into tears. I’m so SO stoked to share with you one of the first same-sex weddings in Australia!
On board was an amazing bunch of humans who all volunteered their services towards the event (all amazing vendors listed at the bottom) and the date was set for the exact moment that same-sex marriages were to become officially legal – 9th January 2018 at the stroke of midnight! We all squeezed inside the quirky city venue Ferdydurke along with the girls’ family, friends AND a bunch of random Melbournians (yep.. this event went public!) and watch history unfold in the most epic, emotional and love-filled way possible. Anyway, I’ll let the images tell how I feel about this moment and just leave you with something that both Teegan + Mahatia want to pass on…
